Established in 2009, Nepal Republic Media (NRM) Private Limited has become one of Nepal's leading and most respected media houses. Besides running two broadsheet daily newspapers – Nagarik (in Nepali) and Republica (in English), NRM also publishes a Nepali weekly tabloid – Shukrabar – and two online news sites – www.nagariknews.com and www.myrepublica.com.
This NRM's new app initiative was to provide their readers yet another opportunity to get informed and updated on the happenings worldwide while on the move.
Architecture
An intermediate API Server fetched data from the live server and processed it before sending it to the mobile devices. This process was needed as older devices were not supporting Unicode fonts. If devices were running on lower than Android 3, then the API returns data in an ASCII format. This was unnecessary for other devices, and the API returned data without processing it.
The iOS and Android applications were built on Native platforms. Java for Android and Objective C was also used to create this application. The Web API was written on CodeIgniter, using the PHP framework.
