Smart ECG System
Three-lead ECG device
A portable ECG device engineered toward a sub-$100 price for primary healthcare use. Pairs with Android over Bluetooth and displays the ECG in real time; it can identify some simpler irregular rhythms.

What exists today
Hardware
A three-lead ECG device that pairs with Android and displays the ECG in real time. It runs on two AA batteries, which typically last above 20 hours of continuous operation, and can identify some of the simpler irregular rhythms and show that on the paired mobile device.
It cleared the testing criteria from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation under ANSI/AAMI/IEC 60601-2-47:2012/(R)2016.
- Analog front end
- AD8232 processes and digitizes the signals from the ECG leads.
- Microcontroller
- STM32 handles digital filters and logical processing.
- Wireless
- HC-05 Bluetooth controller transmits data to the mobile device.
- Power
- 2 × AA, typically above 20 hours of continuous operation.
- Standard
- Cleared AAMI ANSI/AAMI/IEC 60601-2-47:2012/(R)2016 testing criteria.
Being honest about where it falls short
Second prototype
The first prototype uses components that could be smaller, which would make the device lighter and more efficient. More importantly, the HC-05 Bluetooth module does not support iOS devices at all.
- A single BLE module replaces both HC-05 and STM32, executing instructions and transmitting data at once — saving PCB space and running more efficiently.
- iOS and Android can both connect to this version, which the first prototype could not offer.
- A 4-lead port in place of the first prototype's 10-lead connection, making the device more portable.
What the user actually does
How it is used
Place and power on
Electrodes go on the chest; the device powers up and begins capturing electrical activity.
Open the app
Data travels over Bluetooth to the phone and becomes a clear, real-time visualization for the patient or the health worker.
Store or share
Readings are stored for future reference or shared directly with a healthcare provider.
